about

During bouts of anxiety or panic, wide open, lush sound spaces only seem to provide a platform to think myself into an even worse place. While something like Brian Eno's Ascent or an Elaine Radigue piece feels like a wasteland, Painkiller or The Peter Brotzmann Octet is a welcome occupation.

Reduce Expand Excite Rewrite is my first response to this scenario; an attempt to create noise-inspired, chaotic sonic environments that do not fall into minimalist or ambient categories, yet retain some elements of sustained tone minimalism and drone. Each of these tracks was produced with a custom piece of software wired up to mimic a fixed architecture synthesizer (no modular capability), yet the arrangement of components were intricate enough to make the process more like a wrestling match than a programming session. The software was given a set of initial parameters, but from there on out was set loose to play its internal logic out.

The end result was a series of 15 semi-generative recordings that ask for the kind of listening attention that effectively distracts, yet manages to still largely consist of sustained sonic ideas, with or without varying degrees of change over time.

about

Johnny Beaver Corvallis, Oregon

Sonic arts with a focus on experimentalism, drone, and metaphor. Not a huge fan of recording so I won't add here things too often.
